help with browsing galleries

Q what’s a thumbnail?
A ‘thumbnail’ is an art term meaning a quick, small sketch • in web site usage, it means a small version of an image

Q what's a gallery?
A each “gallery” is a group of photos with something in common, e.g. photos of family life • all the gallery photos are shown as small thumbnails on the left • one of the photos is shown much larger, on the right • clicking on a different thumbnail brings up a larger version to the right

Q how do I get from one gallery to another?
A

please look at the left side of the galleries page • there is a set of navigational links below the thumbnails, looking like this:

there are also handy gallery controls above the thumbnails • hold your mouse over each control for a second to see its description • the controls (and the gallery name) look like this:

Q how do I get from one photo to another?
A

please look at the left side of the galleries page, where the thumbnails appear • you can click on a thumbnail to select its photo

alternatively, please look at the right side of the galleries page, above the photo, where there are buttons like those illustrated below • you can click on the buttons to select the previous photo or the next photo

Q how can I browse “all” of the images in all the galleries, at once?
A on the galleries page, click on gallery map • this takes you to a page with every single gallery photo

Q what’s with “limited sales” and the red dots?
A images that include children may only be purchased after prior discussion • school, gallery, and other institutional interest is always encouraged

A

use the “choose image size” controls at the top left of any page for smaller images or larger images • the controls look like this:

Q how can I make the text larger / smaller?
A your browser has controls to change the text size • in internet explorer, you go to the “view” menu at the top of the browser window, and then choose “text size”, “increase” or “decrease” • for other browsers, please check one of these references: indiana university reference, w3c reference, google reference

Q how can I change the background color?
A

use the “choose background” controls at the top right of any page for a gray background • the controls look like this:

Q how can I see more of the galleries page on my screen, so I don't have to scroll up and down so much?
A if possible, make your browser window larger, so it covers the full height of your screen • if you've done this, and you still can't see the whole gallery page, then if possible, increase your screen resolution • in windows, click on “start”, then on “help and support” • in the search box near the top, type “screen resolution” • in the search results on the left-hand side, click on “change your screen resolution” and follow the instructions • after increasing your screen resolution, you may want to increase your screen font size, via display properties / appearance tab / font size

Q why do the photo colors look awful?
A it’s possible that your monitor — the screen you’re looking at — is not displaying properly • please take a look at the set of five bars at right • the top bar should appear as a smooth gradation from white to gray to black • below that are bars of saturated red, green, blue, and yellow • if you don’t see all the bars as described, your monitor may need to be checked
